14 Jun Devine Back In An R5!
After making an impressive debut in the R5 class last year on Wales Rally GB, Callum Devine returns to the class this weekend for the Donegal International Rally. The event will be a welcome break from the Junior World Rally Championship which the Billy Coleman Award holder has been competing in all year and the prospect of driving an R5 car on his favourite surface was an opportunity 24 year old Callum couldn’t turn down.
Callum, who is registered for Irish Tarmac Rally Championship points, is hopeful he can put in a strong performance on what he regards as his home international event. Speaking ahead of the event Callum said; “I love this event and there was never really a question of missing it. Obviously with our focus on the World Rally Championship this year, we haven’t done as much at home as I would like. Living just across the border, Donegal is as good as a home rally to me. There’s always a great buzz about the event and we’re delighted to have pulled off a few last minute deals to get here.” Having already driven his R5 Fiesta on gravel, Callum is relishing the prospect of getting competitive mileage in the car on tarmac. He continues; “It’s no secret that tarmac is my preferred surface but there will be a certain amount of learning to factor into account this time. The cornering speed and braking power of an R5 car on tarmac is sensational and something that will take a little bit of getting used to but hopefully we’ll get near the pace of the top R5 runners by the end of the weekend. It will be a great way to benchmark our pace and I have plenty experience of the stages so if we get a clean run, we’ll keep trying to up our pace over the 3 days. CBM Signs have done a stunning job with the graphics on the car so if it goes as good as it looks, we’ll be alright!”
The Joule Donegal International Rally will start on Friday afternoon with 6 stages before the crew return to Letterkenny. Saturday, traditionally the “big” day in Donegal will see the crews tackle 8 stages including the fabled Carnhill and Knockalla tests before 6 more stages on Sunday including the classic stages of Atlantic Drive and High Glen.
Callum’s season is supported by Motorsport Ireland, Sport Ireland, the Team Ireland Foundation, Fyth, Premier Car Parts and for this weekend, Philip Case Rally Sport and Curran Gate.
